  • John Henry Cardinal Newman to Be Beatified: John Henry Cardinal Newman (1801–1890) will be beatified on September 19, 2010. His life and thought have been the subject of a number of books from Eerdmans, including Newman and Truth, Newman and Faith, Newman and the Word, and Clear Heads and Holy Hearts.   • Prominent Evangelical Scholar Passes Away: Eerdmans notes with sadness the passing of Donald Bloesch, who was Professor Emeritus at the University of Dubuque Theological Seminary. Bloesch was also an advisory editor for Christianity Today, and he published many books with Eerdmans, including The Crisis of Piety, The Evangelical Renaissance, and Wellsprings of Renewal.   • Passing of a Catholic Philosopher: Eerdmans offers its sympathies to the family of Thomas Molnar, an esteemed philosopher who passed away on July 20, 2010. Molnar was the author of many books, including The Pagan Temptation (1987), Twin Powers: Politics and the Sacred (1988), and The Church: Pilgrim of Centuries (1990).   • Loss of a Marriage and Family Scholar: Eerdmans notes with sadness the passing of Don Browning, who was the Alexander Campbell Professor Emeritus of Ethics and the Social Sciences at the University of Chicago Divinity School. He also served as director of the Lilly Project on Religion, Culture, and the Family and was coeditor of the Religion, Marriage, and Family series from Eerdmans.   • Author and Philosopher Passes Away: Eerdmans offers condolences for the passing of Robert Wennberg, who died on July 18 following a brief battle with pancreatic cancer. Wennberg was Professor of Philosophy at Westmont College, Santa Barbara, California. He also wrote many books including Faith at the Edge: A Book for Doubters, winner of a 2010 Christianity Today award of merit.   • George Hunsinger Receives Karl Barth Award: The Union of Evangelical Churches (UEK) honored George Hunsinger, author of Disruptive Grace, with the 2010 Karl Barth Award for his interpretation of Karl Barth’s theology and the political testimony that resulted from it as well as his achievements as a teacher of theology.   • Catholic Press Association Awards Two Eerdmans Titles: The Catholic Press Association has awarded first place honors to A Pilgrim in a Pilgrim Church by Rembert G. Weakland in the biography category, and to Medieval Exegesis, Volume 3 by Henri de Lubac in the scripture category. For a full list of awards given to Eerdmans titles, visit the awards page.
  • Author Michael Jinkins Is President-Elect of Louisville Presbyterian Theological Seminary: Congratulations to Michael Jinkins, author of Called to Be Human and Letters to New Pastors, who is to become the new president of Louisville Presbyterian Theological Seminary.   • Two Eerdmans Titles Are Top Ten Academy of Parish Clergy Picks: The Academy of Parish Clergy has selected At the Scent of Water, by J. Gerald Janzen, and The Power to Comprehend With All the Saints, edited by Wallace M. Alston Jr. and Cynthia A. Jarvis, as two of the Top Ten Books for Parish Ministry published in 2009.   • Influential Officer of The Salvation Army Passes Away: Eerdmans notes with sadness the passing of Colonel Henry Gariepy of The Salvation Army, who died on April 3, 2010. He wrote numerous books, including Christianity in Action: The International History of The Salvation Army (Eerdmans, 2009). Gariepy will be remembered for his extensive writing, teaching and mentoring ministry, which earned him the Army's highest honor, Order of the Founder.   • Loss of a Dead Sea Scrolls Scholar: World famous Dead Sea Scrolls scholar Hanan Eshel passed away on April 8, 2010 from a long battle with cancer. Author of The Dead Sea Scrolls and the Hasmonean State, Eshel was associate professor in the Department of Land of Israel Studies and Archaeology at Bar-Ilan University, Ramat Gan, Israel. He published extensively on the Dead Sea Scrolls and conducted many excavations at both Qumran and the Refuge Caves used by Jews during the Bar Kokhba Revolt.   • Eerdmans Recognized in Christianity Today Book Awards: The annual Christianity Today book awards were announced today, and it is our pleasure to report that five Eerdmans titles have been recognized on this year’s list. I Told Me So by Gregg A. Ten Elshof was chosen as the winner in the Christian Living category and Notes from Underground written by Fyodor Dostoevsky, and newly translated by Boris Jakim, was selected as winner in the Fiction category. Awards of Merit were also given to Faith at the Edge by Robert N. Wennberg in the Apologetics/Evangelism category, The First and Second Letters to the Thessalonians by Gordon D. Fee in the Biblical Studies category, and The World Missionary Conference, Edinburgh 1910 by Brian Stanley in the Missions/Global Affairs category.   • Respected Author and Historian Ed Harrell Gives Insight into the Life of Oral Roberts: David Edwin Harrell, Jr., whose 1985 biography of Oral Roberts is considered the standard work on the famous evangelist, is being quoted in numerous news articles on the life and influence of Roberts — who died Tuesday at the age of 91. Harrell's newest project is a meticulously researched biography of Pat Robertson, due from Eerdmans in the spring of 2010.
